Overlooked UV Safety Tips for Woodworkers (Avoid These Mistakes)
UV lights are serious tools. And like any high-output shop gear, they need to be treated with respect. I’m Pierce with Lite n Done and today, I’m going to walk you through the three safety upgrades every Lite n Done user should be using. We’re talking about fire hazards, eye damage, and skin exposure. These aren’t optional. They’re necessary if you want to work smart, fast, and safe.
Let’s start with the leg kit. This is the single most important upgrade you can make. The legs bolt right onto the base of your Pro and Core models using the included Allen wrench and longer screws. Just remove the bottom two screws, drop the legs in, and snug them down using the longer screws. Why is this critical? Because these lights get hot. Set the light down while it's on, and it can scorch the surface—or worse, start a fire.
With the legs installed, the LEDs are elevated. That extra inch gives you visible confirmation the light is still on.It also creates just enough clearance to prevent a heat buildup on flammable surfaces. Simple upgrade, massive safety payoff.
Now let’s talk eye safety. The Lite n Done Pro and Core models use high-powered 385nm UV-A. This is in the danger zone for your eyes and should be avoided. You must wear UV-rated eye protection. No exceptions. To show why, I’ll use a spectrometer. With no protection, the UV levels spike. Drop in a polycarbonate lens—and watch that number drop to safe levels.
UV exposure isn’t just about your eyes. If you're working overhead, your skin—especially face and scalp—is getting direct exposure too. That risk builds up over time. Wear a brimmed hat or hood when using the light above you. And cover your arms if you're running long cure sessions. Think of it like sunlight—but invisible and concentrated. For occasional use, our UV lights are no stronger than the sun at high noon on a summer day. For prolonged exposure like in a production setting, I highly recommend covering your skin up with a long sleeve shirt at least.
The Lite n Done handheld UV Curing lights provide top-tier irradiance. They are built for speed and precision—but that power comes with responsibility. Use the legs. Use the glasses. Protect your skin and for god’s sake, don’t look at the lights directly. These three habits will keep you safe, your shop protected, and your workflow uninterrupted. Like our motto says, Inspect. Perfect. Cure. But let’s do it Safely.
