Why Choose a Clean Armor Wood Finish? (The Benefits, Explained)

Before we get our hands dirty, let's talk about why Clean Armor Wood Finish is a fantastic choice. It's not just another product on the shelf; it offers some distinct advantages that make it stand out:

  • Cures in minutes: Take Back Your Weekend: Imagine a finish that goes on like any other typical clear wood finish but cures in only 2 minutes! This is the magic of Clean Armor Wood Finish. Designed for the Maker in a dusty space, furniture restorer, small business, and industrial manufacturers, this wood finish will truly change the way you look at finishing projects forever. The special finish cures when exposed to UV light either from a hand held UV light or put in the sun in 2 minutes. No more waiting around watching the paint dry.
  • Built to Last: Durability You Can Count On: This UV Cured finish shrugs off scratches, spills, and the general wear and tear of everyday life. That's the promise of Clean Armor. This isn't your grandpa's delicate varnish that chips at the slightest touch. It's formulated to create a tough, resilient barrier that protects your wood from the hazards of a busy household. Think kids, pets, clumsy guests – Clean Armor can handle it. This is particularly important for high-use items like dining tables, coffee tables, and kitchen cabinets. You're investing in a finish that will keep your furniture looking great for years, not months.
  • Easy Application: Even if You're a Beginner: Let's be honest, some wood finishes can be intimidating. They require complex techniques, specialized tools, and a whole lot of patience. Clean Armor is different. It's designed to be user-friendly, even if you've never applied a wood finish before. The consistency is just right – not too thick, not too thin – making it easy to spread evenly. Plus, it cures in 2 minutes, so you can apply multiple coats in quick succession without spending weeks on a single project.
  • Enhancing, Not Masking, the Beauty of Wood: This is where Clean Armor truly shines. It doesn't just sit on top of the wood like a plastic coating; it penetrates the grain, enhancing the natural color and texture. Think of it as bringing out the wood's inner beauty. Whether you're working with a rich mahogany, a warm cherry, or a classic oak, Clean Armor will deepen the color and highlight the unique character of each piece. It's like giving your wood a spa treatment!
  • Showcases the Wood Grain: The best part of using wood for furniture and other projects is the unique grain. Clean Armor Wood Finish will accentuate the grain, giving any piece a unique look. No two pieces of wood are the same, so no two projects using Clean Armor Wood Finish will be the same.
  • Eco-Friendly Formulation: Good for Your Home, Good for the Planet: In today's world, we're all becoming more conscious of the products we use and their impact on the environment. Clean Armor Wood Finish is formulated with Zero VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This means no harmful fumes are released into the air during application and drying, making it a safer choice for you, your family, and the planet. You can breathe easy knowing you're using a product that prioritizes both performance and sustainability.

Understanding the Magic: What Makes Clean Armor Wood Finish Work?

So, what's the secret sauce? What makes Clean Armor Wood Finish so effective? It's all about the science behind the formula:

  • The Technological Breakthrough: Curing With Light: The heart of Clean Armor is a blend of advanced polymers and resins that cure using UV (Ultraviolet Light). These aren't your run-of-the-mill ingredients. They're carefully selected and combined to create a finish that's both flexible, incredibly strong and will cure in minutes. The flexibility allows the finish to expand and contract with the wood as temperature and humidity change, preventing cracking. The strength provides the resistance to scratches, impacts, and everyday wear.  If you are interested in learning more about the modern miracle of UV, here is a deep dive on the technology behind the chemistry of UV cured finishes. • Advanced Polymers and Resins: The Foundation of Strength: The heart of Clean Armor is a blend of advanced polymers and resins. These aren't your run-of-the-mill ingredients. They're carefully selected and combined to create a finish that's both flexible and incredibly strong. The flexibility allows the finish to expand and contract with the wood as temperature and humidity change, preventing cracking. The strength provides the resistance to scratches, impacts, and everyday wear.
  • Zero-VOC Solvents: A Responsible Choice: As mentioned earlier, Clean Armor uses Zero-VOC solvents. This is a crucial aspect of its formulation. Traditional solvents can release harmful fumes that are not only unpleasant to breathe but also contribute to air pollution. Clean Armor's commitment to zero-VOC’s demonstrates a dedication to both user safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Penetrating Formula: Working With the Wood: Unlike some finishes that simply sit on the surface, Clean Armor is designed to penetrate the wood fibers. This creates a stronger bond and allows the finish to become an integral part of the wood, rather than just a superficial layer. This penetration also contributes to the enhanced appearance, bringing out the depth and richness of the wood grain.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Clean Armor Wood Finish

Okay, let's get down to business! Here's a detailed, step-by-step guide to applying Clean Armor Wood Finish. Don't worry; it's easier than you might think.

Phase 1: Preparation is Key (The Foundation for Success)

Before you even open the bottle of finish, proper preparation is absolutely crucial. This is where many people go wrong, and it can significantly impact the final result.

  1. Gather Your Supplies:
    • Clean Armor Wood Finish (of course!)
    • Clean Armor Wood Filler (for repairs)
    • Sandpaper (various grits, from coarse to fine – typically 120, 180, and 220 grit)
    • Sandpaper Block or orbital sander
    • Tack cloth (for removing dust)
    • Clean rags (lint-free is best)
    • High-quality brushes
    • Drop cloths or plastic sheeting (to protect your work area)
    • Gloves (to protect your hands)
    • Respirator (especially if working in a poorly ventilated area)
  2. Clean the Wood Surface if refinishing: Start with a clean slate. Remove any dirt, grease, old finish, or residue from the wood. Use mild soap and water solution for general cleaning. If there's old finish that needs to be removed, you might need to use a chemical stripper (follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully) but I prefer to just sand off the old finish.
  3. Sand the Wood: This is the most important step! Sanding creates a smooth, even surface that allows the finish to adhere properly. Start with a coarser grit sandpaper (e.g., 120 grit) to level out any imperfections or remove any remaining old finish. Then, progressively move to finer grits (e.g., 180, then 220 grit) to create a silky-smooth surface. Always sand with the grain of the wood, never against it. Use a sanding block to ensure even pressure. If you find there are repairs needed, like gouges or small holes, apply Clean Armor 737 Knot Filler to these defects and cure them with the UV Light. For a deeper dive on how to use this product, see the article on filling wood knots and defects with Clean Armor 737.
  4. Remove All Sanding Dust: This is critical! Even the smallest particles of dust can ruin a finish. Use a tack cloth to meticulously remove all traces of sanding dust. A tack cloth is a sticky, cheesecloth-like material that picks up even the finest dust particles. You can also use a vacuum with a brush attachment, followed by a microfiber rag.

Phase 2: Applying the Clean Armor Wood Finish (The Art of the Coat)

Now for the exciting part – applying the finish!

  1. Shake well! Vigorously shake the can of Clean Armor Wood to ensure that the flattening agents are evenly distributed throughout the entire bottle. Don’t worry about introducing air bubbles at this point. We are going to be wiping on this finish.
  2. Apply a Thin, Even Coat: Dip a lint free cloth into the finish, but don't overload it. Apply a thin, even coat, working in the direction of the wood grain. A little goes a long way! Use long, smooth strokes, and avoid applying too much finish at once. It's better to apply multiple thin coats than one thick coat, which can lead to excessive sanding after the finish cures.
  3. Let the finish incorporate and then Buff! Move the finish around your piece with either a lint free rag or paintbrush. Make sure to take excessive finish from wet areas and move it to thirsty pockets that could use more finish. After a few minutes of this, take a clean lint free rag and buff off excess Clean Armor.
  4. Shine the Light: Remember the Clean Armor saying. When you like what you see, shine the light!  This finish will not dry until you shine your UV curing light on the finish. Make sure to fully cure the finish for 2 minutes.  You will know it is fully cured when you scuff sand it and it comes up white.
  5. Sand Lightly Between Coats: Once the first coat is cured, lightly sand the surface with very fine sandpaper (e.g., 220 or 320 grit). This is called "scuff sanding," and it creates a slightly rough surface that helps the next coat adhere better. Be gentle! You're just lightly smoothing the surface, not removing the finish.
  6. Remove Dust Again: After sanding, remove all dust with a tack cloth or vacuum and damp rag.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Repeat steps 2-6 for at least two more coats, or as many as needed to achieve your desired look and level of protection. Remember, thin coats are key!  If you are looking for a true thick build finish, using a spray technique is the better way to go. Please see my other article on How to Spray Clean Armor Wood Finish.
  8. Allow Full Cure Time Once the final coat of Clean Armor Wood Finish is applied and cured, let the piece sit for about 10 minutes before putting it into service.

Tips for Achieving a Flawless Clean Armor Wood Finish (Pro Secrets)

Here are some extra tips and tricks that can help you achieve a truly professional-looking finish:

  • Panty hose, yes you are reading this correctly: A technique used with Clean Armor is called Tipping Off. It is basically a method of applying finish in a rag covered in pantyhose. The stockings provide a good streak free finish. Lifting your rag applicator towards the end of your stroke will provide you a smooth, streak free finish.
  • Thin it out: If you are finding that Clean Armor is not laying down to your satisfaction, Add 10% Isopropyl Alcohol. Make sure it is 90% or above. The 70% stuff will not work.
  • Warm it up: Clean Armor should be applied at or above room temperature for it to properly flow and integrate into the wood. This helps create a smooth finish that you will love
  • Let the Light Shine: Remember, when you like what you see, shine the light. This will cure the product.
  • Practice on Scrap Wood: If you're new to wood finishing, practice on a piece of scrap wood before tackling your main project. This will give you a feel for the application process and help you avoid mistakes.
  • Apply in the Right Temperature: Clean Armor should be applied at or above room temperature for it to properly flow and integrate into the wood. This helps create a smooth finish that you will love
